This was the most enjoyable game I've had since joining the site, on and off the pitch. The match was eventually decided on penalties after a thrilling 3-3 encounter and it was a fitting end to the match as both sides had chances and the lottery that is pens was the only way to decide it.
The match started perfectly for Catania with Cho Jaejin going close with 2 opportunities before he was released through one on one and his effort was pushed into the on rushing Tuncay Sanli who slotted home his first goal for Catania on only his second start in the 10th minute. This was as good as it got for Catania in the 1st half as the defence began to have a nightmare of epic proportions!! 5 minutes after the goal had gone in De Jong who has been very reliable at right back since his mid season move was done with a bit of trickery and pace on the wing by Mantorras and was a bit late in his challenge. Although it wasn't in the most threatening of places and the tackle only appeared to be late and not malicious Catania manager Shained was only expecting a yellow but to his shock the referee produced a red. Catania manager Shained thought about making a substitution but was very pleased with the form of Jaejin and Tuncay so decided to leave his team without a right back, a mistake he would come to regret.
A few minutes later Derby come racing down the left wing and with no right back fro cover Stovini didn't stand much of a chance of stopping the attack. Mantorras worked a bit of space and chipped a nice cross to the on rushing Beckham to coolly finish with a diving header. 10 minutes after this Derby were 2 - 1 up courtesy of Beckham and dodgy defending once again. Mantorras worked a bit of space in the box and seemed to lose control of the ball, as he did Stovini fell to ground and Mantorras went over his leg. Stovini protested his innocence but the ref had none of it and awarded a penalty, Catania manager Shained was livid. U p stepped Beckham who hit a lovely penalty into the top corner which was too hard and slightly too high for Bizzari to stop. This turn of events would come back to hurt Derby as later on in the game Mantorras seemed to be struggling with an injury resulting from the tackle and had to be taken off.
Despite the ten men Catania continued to push forward creating a number of chances for last season club top goalscorer Cho Jaejin but despite his great positional play he couldn't convert any of his chances and the same could be about Agbonglahor. Then just before half time with Catania's european dreams in tatters and confidence at an all time low Derby struck again. Substitute Pandiani raced at the Catanian defence before laying a ball into the path of Beckham who side footed home from 25-30 yards out to round off his hat-trick. This will be a moment Bizzari would like to forget as it was terrible keeping with the ball going in just off centre.
Half Time
With his team 2 goals and a man down Shained had a lot of work to do with his team and he wasn't sure if they were capable. Only 2 of his substitutes available were in any decent shape (2 green), Stephen Taylor (not starting because of the startling form of Stovini (red)) and spare left back Falsini. For the 1st time since taking over as manger of Catania Shained decided to change from the trusty 4-4-2 formation to 3-4-2 in the absence of right back De Jong with Taylor coming on to replace an out of sorts Lucas.
The next 20 minutes was all out attack from Catania with Cho Jaejin and Tuncay missing a few chances but the breakthrough finally came on the 55th minute when good work between Emmanuelson and Tuncay resulted in Tuncays cross being put into his own goal by a player described by manager Kendall only as the ginger cunt!! 15 minutes later Catania were level, Rosicky who had a terrible game gained a free kick on the edge of the area. He preceded to take the free kick himself which was headed off the line by the ginger cunt, the ball fell to a very on form Colluci who held off 2 challenges on the right side of the box before playing it to Agbonglahor who skipped past his defender with a brilliant 1st touch and smashed it across goal into the top corner leaving the keeper standing with an exquisite finish. Game on.
The next twenty minutes was end to end with neither die managing to create any real gilt edged chances to tstop the game going into extra time.
Extra Time
Catania made two substitutions at half time, Emmanuelson off for Falsini and the hard working and very tired Cho Jaejin off for an out of sorts Todorov.
Both sides had minor chances within the 1st period but it was obvious tiring legs were beginning to tell as many of the slick moves had not reared there heads in extra time. The second half had both sides really pushing it to avoid penalties. With 5 minutes to go Pandiani had an unbelievable chance from what appeared a huge offside position but could only prod a foot at it and the ball fell graciously into Bizzari's hands. There was still to be one more chance in the game, with time ticking away Agbonglahor player Todorov in and his lovely dinked effort was expertly saved and so the match was destined for penalties.

Derby won the toss and decided that they would go 1st....

Derby - Up steps Pandiani and with the miss from 5 minutes still in his mind blazes his penalty high and wide.
Catania - Tuncay slots his pen low to the right which is saved but goes in off the keepers arm, 1-0 Catania
Penalty 2
Derby - Second penalty is saved low to the right by Bizzari
Catania - Todorov steps up and sends the keeper the wrong way finishing high up into the top right corner, 2-0 Catania

Catania - Agbonglahor has his penalty low to the left saved, 2-1 Catania. Catania start to get nervous
Penalty 4
Derby - Up steps hat-trick hero David Beckham. Beckham hits an identical penalty as he did in the half, hard and towards the top right corner. This time Bizzari's athleticism stopped it with a brilliant save flinging himself towards the top corner...more tears for Becks???
Catania - Up steps substitute Falsini who hasn't had much pitch time at all this season. He sends the keeper the wrong way hitting it low to the left.
